How Flexible Rental Helps Kier Progress Towards a Lower-Carbon Fleet

A flexible, phased approach without compromise
Enterprise Flex-E-Rent’s flexible approach is playing a vital role in helping us take clear, practical steps towards achieving net zero without compromising operational efficiency.
A standout example is our Anglian Water contract. The project required a change in fleet, and the transport manager was keen to begin the transition towards electric vehicles. However, the site lacked sufficient charging infrastructure, and the current crop of battery-only EVs were unsuitable for the project. As a result, we chose to introduce hybrids as a sensible first step in the right direction.

We needed the vehicles built to a precise specification, including Anglian Water livery, Chapter 8 markings, beacons, a 3000W inverter with dual leisure batteries and charging system, internal and external working lights, and wash facilities. Unfortunately, we had just missed the
manufacturer’s cut-off point for the quarter — and in any case, the site infrastructure wouldn’t be ready for several months.
If we were leasing, we’d risk being stuck with the wrong vehicles for years. But the beauty of working with Flex-E-Rent is that they were able to supply diesel lead-in vehicles built to the same high specification, enabling us to keep the project site operational without compromising our environmental goals.
Flex-E-Rent was able to time the delivery of the new hybrids to coincide with the completion of on-site infrastructure, at which point the diesel vehicles were returned. It was a practical, operationally viable, and environmentally sustainable approach.
